Retirement
One period of major change in one’s lifespan is when one is facing retirement.
Retirement is a natural progression towards slowing down in the career trajectory of a person; however, it is not always perceived as such. It very much depends on whether this change in role is welcome and positively anticipated. For many individuals retirement is associated with identity-loss, negative feelings and depression may surface, and a period of mourning may be necessary before role re-adjustment is accomplished and joy of life is restored.
Career counselling may support individuals during this difficult time of facing retirement to re-adjust to their new identity.
